Karl Lagerfeld sketches an alternative for the Queen’s shawl

I had to post something about the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee because I am here in London. I loved the 4-day event and I was happy to see a ‘different eye’ discussing what was happening and most importantly, the Queen’s outfit (result of the times we live in – I am not sure that what a head of State wears would have been so discussed/ mattered 100 years back…).

So, the image above is a sketch by Chanel head designer and creative director Karl Lagerfeld, before the events. I was surprised that he would be interested in the whole celebration, however apparently Karl (name of his own label) is a known royalist, having asked his parents to buy him his fist TV, so he could watch Queen’s Elizabeth II’s coronation. How great of a story is that?

Karl commented for France 2 the day of the Thames flotilla, as it was happening, while also being on Twitter and sketching an alternative to the Queen’s shawl – the only criticism he had – “for her role, for who she is, it is hard to imagine a different outfit that the Queen could have sported better”, “I would have dressed the Queen in a cape, it would have been prettier than her shawl”.

Here is what he came up with, on the spot, taking some creative licence.

I personally love it, but I would not actually see the Queen wearing it (too many frills and ruffles). Too bad for Karl Lagerfeld, as I am sure he would looove to dress the Queen – maybe this was an attempt thinking about the next Jubilee ? 🙂

In any case, the designer was right about a couple of things. The day of the flotilla the weather was absolutely miserable, I can imagine it was quite cold on the river and as it turned out the Duke of Edinburgh did get sick and ended up in hospital. Also, the day of the Concert, the Queen was wearing in the beginning, on top of the golden dress, a cape. Inspired by Karl?

Maybe he could at least suggest some outfits to the Queen’s designer, for future events. I am sure he would be happy with that.

Below, what the Queen was actually wearing.
